Terms of Service

These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of Lacuna, the vocabulary-learning service available at trylacuna.com. By creating an account or using the service, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use Lacuna.

Lacuna lets you submit a list of vocabulary words and generates fill-in-the-blank sentences for practice. Generation is performed by AI models (Claude, hosted by Anthropic, for paid users; Llama 3.1, self-hosted, for free-tier users). Sentences and validations are AI-generated and may contain errors — Lacuna is a study aid, not an authoritative reference.

You are responsible for:

• Keeping your sign-in credentials confidential.
• All activity that occurs under your account.
• Providing accurate information at sign-up.
• Notifying us at support@trylacuna.com of any unauthorized use of your account.

Each account is for one person. Sharing accounts is not permitted.

You agree not to:

• Submit content designed to elicit harmful, illegal, or abusive output from the underlying AI models.
• Attempt to circumvent free-tier limits, rate limits, or paywalls (e.g., creating multiple accounts to multiply free trials).
• Scrape, copy, or redistribute generated content at scale, or use it to train competing AI services.
• Reverse-engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract source code from the service.
• Probe, scan, or test the vulnerability of the service, or breach any security or authentication measures.
• Use Lacuna in any way that violates applicable law.

We reserve the right to suspend or terminate accounts that violate these rules.

Lacuna offers a free tier with a limited number of generations per account. The Lacuna Pro subscription unlocks higher limits and AI-generated content from a more capable model. Pricing and feature details are shown on the pricing page and may change with prior notice on this page.

Billing. Pro subscriptions are billed monthly in advance through Stripe. By subscribing, you authorize us to charge your payment method on a recurring basis until you cancel.

Cancellation. You can cancel any time from your account's billing portal. Cancellation stops future renewals; you retain Pro access until the end of the current billing period.

Refunds. We do not offer prorated refunds for partial months. If you believe you've been billed in error, email support@trylacuna.com and we'll review case-by-case.

Price changes. We may change subscription prices with at least 30 days' notice via email. Price changes take effect at your next renewal.

Your content. The word lists you submit remain yours. By submitting them, you grant Lacuna a limited license to process them solely to provide the service.

Generated content. AI-generated sentences and validations are made available to you for personal study. You may use them for non-commercial educational purposes. Bulk redistribution, public republication, or use as training data for third-party AI models is not permitted.

Lacuna's brand and software. The Lacuna name, logo, and underlying software are owned by Lacuna. You may not use them without permission.

The service is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. AI-generated sentences may contain factual errors, awkward phrasing, or unintended ambiguity. Do not rely on Lacuna for high-stakes language assessment without independent verification.

We do not guarantee uninterrupted access. Free-tier generation relies on self-hosted infrastructure that may experience downtime; paid-tier generation depends on third-party AI services (Anthropic) that may experience their own outages.

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Lacuna and its operators are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of data, revenue, or goodwill, arising out of your use of the service. Our total cumulative liability for any claim related to the service will not exceed the greater of (a) the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim arose, or (b) USD $50.

You may stop using Lacuna at any time and request account deletion by emailing support@trylacuna.com. We may suspend or terminate your account if you violate these Terms or if continued service is impractical for technical or legal reasons.

These Terms are governed by the laws of the United States and the jurisdiction in which Lacuna is operated, without regard to conflict of laws principles. Disputes will be resolved in the courts of that jurisdiction.

We may update these Terms from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by an updated "Last updated" date at the top of this page, and significant changes will be communicated by email or via a notice in the app. Continued use after a change constitutes acceptance.
